Blogs - Merits & Demerits

I had a friend who said that all these blog/personal websites etc is 'bakwaas' (stupid/waste in Hindi, the national language of India) and a waste of both time and money. I doubt he knew what a blog is, he had just seen my blog and made a comment, however the point he raised is debatable.
Was he practical? He used to work with me and has gone on to find a job at one of the best companies and is successful - wheres as I am not exactly so in my opinion. So is that true ? What do you say ?
Even the person who introduced me to blogs never started one, probably he is too busy to start off on whims - probably it does your image some damage when you blog in public ? Just because someone blogs should I blog too ?
What do you see as the merits and demerits of blogs as a medium ? Too intrusive or personal a medium; just a fad/whim? Or a storehouse of information, invaluable thoughts and knowledge sharing ?

    In my opinion, blogging has nothing to do with your professional life. The two are just not connected, unless you are wasting a lot of time on it. U feel like writing about something, u blog else u don't. It is as simple as that.

    Different people need different methods. It is somewhat related to the push pull methods of marketing(I am not saying all people who blog are trying to market themselves).
    One way to keep in contact(among other things) is the push method(call them up, email them...) and the other is the pull method(blogging). You blog what you like and let the people who are interested read it instead of assuming someone is interested and force it one them. It is all a matter of choice and that is the keyword that makes blogging(as well as the internet) so powerful.

    Ashoka, you can get fired for blogging and you say it has nothing to do with your professional life.

    And as for the push-pull mechnisms its an interesting concept Sandeep - however the professional part you mention has a different context altogether ... !
    One Microsaoft guy was fired too if you remember for taking a snap of Power Mac G4s being offloaded from a truck on MS's premises. Hope nothing like that happens to me!

    The push-pull concept you mention, Sandeep, is interesting - though the professional connection is altogether a different thing. A Microsoft guy if you remember, was thrown out, for taking snaps of Power Mac G4s being offloaded from a truck on to MS's premises. Hope nothing like that happens to me !

    hey guys,

    a lotta online communities are getting formed and people interact online thru groups, blogs etc., this is goin to be the future ( say for the next coupla years before some new pops up) and smart people know how to make the best use of such new(? arent blogs rather ol'?) concepts.

    my online presence ( be it a website or blog or an egroup ) has helped me learn new things, even get coupla job offers.

    my blog has a LOT to do with my profession.i think its an investment. i spend max 1-1/2 hours a week bloggin and i get to learn and share a lotta things professionally.

    I agree with your friend's comment partially .... coz I have a friend who got hooked into blogging so much that it was sad seeing such a young soul wasting his life on something that was not so worthwile. But there are benefits in blogging too,like speaking your mind out on issues which are close to your heart(unless it doesnt create trouble with the authorities ofcourse ;) ) or sharing thoughts information etc etc.... So Blog but dont take it to a level where your personal life is at stake .....

DNA newspaper plagiarizes my photographs!

The newspaper DNA (Daily News and Analysis - http://www.dnaindia.com/bangalore ) seems to have involved in not verifying its sources of photographs and having used my photographs (does this amount to plagiarism? I think it does) after it carried some of my pictures in the 'After Hrs' section of its newspaper on 31st January 2009, which I had taken at the IIMB Yamini 2009. It is good that they covered the event but they should have cited/verified the sources of the photographs. In all probability they or their sources just picked up the photos from my blog, with the belief that no one would notice anyways - seems they could not escape as luck would have it, I spotted them in the DNA paper on Saturday. It was early in the morning when as I flipped open the last page of the supplement that I was stunned to see my pics, which I was able to recognize immediately - however there were no credits anywhere in sight! Please check the photos below from the e-paper version on their website...
